The field of the 2014 Golden Pendant (1400m) will now be vying for their share of an impressive $300,000 prize pool after the Australian Turf Club confirmed they will be raising the Group 3 race’s jackpot by $50,000.
Having exhibited particularly classy fields and been won by several notable performers in recent years, the increase in prize money is part of a push for the Golden Pendant, previously known as the Research Stakes, to rise in ratings to a Group 2 event.
General Manager of Racing for the Australian Turf Club, Matt Rudolph said Stan Fox Stakes Day at Rosehill Gardens will now be known as Golden Pendant Day, and is confident of a rise to Group 2 status come the race’s 2015 edition.
“More Joyous won the race in 2012 and then Sharnee Rose beat a red-hot field last year, so the race’s rating keeps going up,” Rudolph told News Limited.
“We are confident the Golden Pendant will obtain Group 2 status very soon and eventually get to Group 1 which will plug that hole in our spring.”
New South Wales racing personality Ken Callendar is not sold on the injection of funds into the Golden Pendant kitty, highlighting other races such as the Group 1 Metropolitan (2400m) as better options for attention.
“It is races like the Melbourne Cup, the Doncaster, the Sydney Cup and classic weight-for-age races that captures people’s imagination, not races restricted to one sex,” Callendar said in his column in the Daily Telegraph.
“The Metropolitan is the race in the spring the ATC should be rebuilding.
“It is a race that can give a final boost for imports coming to Australia for the Melbourne Cup and for locals trying to qualify for our greatest race.
“The Metro used to be a top race and it can be again.”
The $300,000 Group 3 Golden Pendant has been scheduled to run at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse on September 27th in 2014.
