Shamalia to Contest 2014 Golden Pendant

July 30th, 2014

Performing well over her maiden racing preparation through summer and early autumn this year, co-trainer James Cummings has revealed rising four-year-old Shamalia will initially target the Group 3 Golden Pendant (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens on September 27th.

Winning each of her first two race starts at her home course of Randwick, Shamalia produced a keen turn of foot to finish a fighting fifth in the Group 3 Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200m) on February 8th before arguably producing her best performance to date when charging home to win the Listed Fireball Stakes (1100m) in March.

Running on for fourth in the Listed Gosford Guineas (1200m) on April 6th, the Shamardal filly returned to the spelling paddock after being unable to match the late pace and eighth in the Group 2 Royal Sovereign Stakes (1200m) on April 19th.

Pleased with the building form over the filly out of Laylia, Cummings told Racing Ahead she will likely partake in another barrier trial in August before returning to the competitive arena.

“She galloped well this morning,” Cummings said on Tuesday.

“She is probably going to have a little trial in the middle of August and a race like the Golden Pendant in Sydney might be a nice race for her before she heads down to Melbourne with a few options in front of her.”

While yet to confirm a path for Shamalia post-2014 Golden Pendant, Cummings revealed a trip to Melbourne may be on the cards to contest such events as the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on October 18th, and even the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) on November 1st, should her form warrant such a nomination.

Yet to secure a Golden Pendant title as a team, the Cummings’ will be chasing a second victory in the Group 3 event after training partner and Australian racing legend Bart Cummings took out the 2004 edition with Beasame Mucho.
